If my relative died with an account in their own name, must that account go through probate court?

If there were no beneficiaries (POD/TOD designations) listed on that account, yes, it would need to go through probate court to pass to beneficiaries. Depending on the value of the account, there may be expedited probate procedures for the account so that it doesn’t have to go through the full-blown probate process.
